Breaking the Silence: Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse

As a family mediator practising in the UK for over a decade, I've witnessed firsthand a concerning trend that often goes unspoken in our society: men experiencing domestic abuse. While domestic abuse against women is rightly given significant attention, male victims frequently suffer in silence, their experiences overlooked or, worse still, dismissed.

The Hidden Reality

The statistics paint a stark picture. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in the year ending March 2023, approximately 750,000 men in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse. This represents roughly 3.4% of the male population. Perhaps more alarming is that these figures likely underrepresent the true scale of the problem, as many men never report their experiences.

Understanding Male Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse against men can take many forms:

Physical abuse isn't always the most prominent form of abuse men experience. Often, the abuse manifests as:

- Psychological manipulation and emotional abuse

- Financial control and exploitation

- Social isolation from friends and family

- Using children as leverage

- Threats of false accusations

- Verbal abuse and humiliation

- Controlling behaviour and coercive control

Why Men Don't Speak Up

Through my mediation practice, I've observed several recurring reasons why men hesitate to seek help:

Societal stigma plays a significant role. Many men feel shame admitting they're being abused, believing it somehow diminishes their masculinity. There's also a prevalent misconception that men cannot be victims of domestic abuse, leading to fear of ridicule or disbelief.

Cultural expectations about masculinity often prevent men from acknowledging their experiences as abuse. Many have told me they didn't initially recognise their situation as abusive because they didn't fit the "typical victim" profile they had in mind.

The Impact on Divorce and Separation

When male victims of domestic abuse face divorce or separation, the situation becomes particularly complex. Many fear they won't be believed during legal proceedings or worry about losing access to their children. This is where family mediation can play a crucial role.

As a mediator, I've helped many men navigate these challenging circumstances. Mediation provides a safe, neutral space where both parties can be heard and where arrangements for children, finances, and other practical matters can be discussed constructively.
